RELIGION & CULTURE

Malta has a long Christian legacy. According to the Acts of the Apostles, St Paul was shipwrecked on 'Melite' which many Bible scholars identify with Malta and ministered there. Catholicism is the official and dominant religion in Malta. Malta is known for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, most prominently the Megalithic Temples which are the oldest free standing structures in Europe.

In 1530, Charles I of Spain gave the Islands to the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in perpetual lease. These Knights, a military religious order now known as The Knights of Malta, had been driven out of Rhodes by the Ottoman Empire in 1522.

The official State religion in Malta is Roman Catholic.

There are around 365 churches in Malta!

The Maltese are amongst the oldest Christians in the world. St Paul, shipwrecked on the island of Malta in AD60, brought Christianity to Malta.
